Web Hosting Terms and Definitions



A few common terms and definitions relating to web hosting:

  • Apache - is an open source web server software
  • Autoresponder - is software that automatically responds to email by sending a predetermined email back to the sender.
  • Bandwidth - This is the maximum amount of data which can be transferred across an internet connection at maximum speed. Usually measured in 'bits per second' (bps)
  • CGI - Common Gateway Interface - standard sets of rules that describe how a web server communicates with another piece of software on the same machine.
  • Control Panel - is a browser based management tool that allows one to manage basic website functions
  • Cron - is the ability to run programs at specific intervals based on the server clock
  • Data Transfer - generally refers to the the amount of data (text and images) one is allowed to transfer with a particular account. Usually expressed in gigabits (GB)
  • Disk Space - the amount of storage space one is allowed for all web pages, HTML files, images, CVI bin, log files, etc.
  • Domain Alias - is a domain that points to the same website as another domain
  • Domain Name - the unique name which identifies a web site
  • FTP or File Transfer Protocol - a common protocol for transferring files from one computer to another over the internet
  • Front Page - is a program developed by Microsoft to build and edit web pages and HTML documents
  • HTML or Hypertext Mark-up Language - is a language used to create web pages within a specific format
  • MySQL - is a database management system which stores data in a table format. It is open source software and is extremely popular due to its speed and easy customization.
  • PERL - is a programming language designed for processing text and is frequently used for writing CGI scripts
  • PHP - is an open source HTML embedded scripting language used to create dynamic web pages, and is used on UNIX servers
  • POP - or Post Office Protocol is used for obtaining email from a mailserver
  • SSL - or Secure Socket Layer is a protocol that allows for secure an encrypted transmission of data
  • Subdomain - is a sub-division of a primary domain, for example "johnq.yourdomain.com" is a subdomain of "yourdomain.com"
  • TCP/IP - is the protocol that allows computers to be connected to the internet
